By Ethan Nichols

Interested in experiencing a national park but want to stay within a reasonable distance? Look no further than the greater Cleveland area. The only national park in the state of Ohio, Cuyahoga Valley National Park, sits nestled in the Great Lakes Basin.

Cuyahoga Valley National Park was first designated as a National Recreation Area in 1974, and then as a National Park in 2000.

Whether you’re interested in hiking, horseback riding, golfing or paddling the Cuyahoga River, there’s something for everyone at this park. The park has plenty of nearby campgrounds, but it also boasts two indoor sleeping accommodations for those looking for a less rustic approach.

Hiking

With over 125 miles of trails, Cuyahoga Valley National Park offers both rough, off-road trails and level and accessible trails.

Golfing

There are two golf courses located near the park, and both offer extensive golf options.

Horseback Riding

Cuyahoga Valley National Park offers 10 high-quality horse trails. While visitors are required to bring their own horses, the trails offer over 46 miles of trail that are equestrian friendly.

River Activities

Cuyahoga River runs right through the park, and offers guests the opportunity to kayak, canoe and paddle. In addition to the river, there are multiple ponds in the park available as well.

Questing

Never heard of questing before? It’s similar to geocaching, with participants following clues and directions across the park to various hidden natural gems. Along the way you find boxes and collect stamps in a logbook. It’s a great family activity for those looking to explore the park.

Fishing

Whether you’re an experienced fisherman or just looking to relax by the river for a few hours, Cuyahoga Valley National Park offers opportunities for all. The beautiful natural rivers and ponds allow for ample fishing opportunities. A valid Ohio fishing license is required for those 16 years of age and older.

Birding

Cuyahoga Valley National Park is designated as an Important Bird Area by the National Audubon Society. It’s possible to view over 200 types of birds at the park, and the scenic valley offers the perfect environment to do so.
