By Shelby Besecker

Starting April 1, Put-In-Bay is officially open for the season! This means clear your weekend schedule and start planning your trip to island village. A small Ohio village on South Bass Island in Lake Erie (which requires a ferry ride) makes for a great family trip or weekend getaway with close friends. Here are five main attractions you should see while visiting.

Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial

Built in 1915 and towering 352 feet in the air, it is a reminder of the peace and friendship brought between nations. The tower and open grounds around it are located on an isthmus, a narrow piece of land that connects two area, which is what gives Put-In-Bay a quirky shape. While viewing this spot you can even be escorted by a park ranger to the observation deck.

Tour Train

If you want to continue exploring the island, come aboard the Tour Train! This is a great way to keep kids entertained while viewing the attractions. During the ride a tour guide will discuss the history of the island along with explaining each attraction and answering any questions guests may have. You can purchase tickets at the Downtown Bus terminal, which is on the corner of Delaware and Toledo Avenue.

Put-In-Bay Trading Co.

In the historical downtown by the restaurants, Put-In-Bay Trading Co. is the main souvenir shop. You can find just about anything in this shop including different clothing, swimming gear and all your basic souvenir desires. If you forgot something at home, don’t worry because this shop has you covered!

Mist Pool Bar

Exclusively 21 and up, the Mist Pool Bar is a favorite spot for visitors. Located at the Commodore Resort, this attraction is not only opened to guests of the resort but also visitors to the island. This is the perfect spot to kick back and enjoy a handcrafted cocktail but also admire a light show that happens every night during the open season.

Mr. Ed’s Bar and Grille

Located next to the Commodore Resort, Mr. Ed’s Bar and Grille is a hotspot of the island. Not only is it a restaurant but it is also has three entertainment venues. You can enjoy Cameo Pizza and yummy summer cocktails outside on the patio or indoors while still enjoying lake breezes.
