3 Things to Do in Hocking Hills

Ash Cave is beautiful in the winter months.

Hocking Hills is packed with activities this holiday season

By Corinne Minard

With COVID cases on the rise and no end to the pandemic in sight, holiday trip planning has become very grim indeed. While winter trips have been put on hold, there are locations nearby that allow you to get away for a bit while social distancing. Hocking Hills, for example, is just two-and-a-half hours east of Cincinnati and has many activities ideal for doing by yourself or with family. We’ve found three that you can do this upcoming holiday season.

Hiking

It may be cold outside, but the Hocking Hills area is still a good place to hike during the winter. Its many falls and caves mean there is always something to see, even when all the leaves have fallen. The waterfalls at Ash Cave and Old Man’s Cave, both in Hocking Hills State Park, are particularly stunning in the winter.

Star Gazing

There is no better time to enjoy the stars than when you’re away from the city. The John Glenn Astronomy Park is only about a mile away from the Old Man’s Cave Visitor’s Center and offers pristine views of the night sky. Visitors to the park can bring their own telescopes or simply view the stars with their own eyes.

Shopping

Those looking to get some holiday shopping done while visiting the region can partake in the Hocking Hills Holiday Treasure Hunt, running now through Dec. 12. Participants can collect stamps at the 27 participating stores while looking for gifts. Those who visit any six can enter for a chance to win a weekend getaway in Hocking Hills for four people.
